When MP3s first started getting popular there were all sorts of ways to get them. It was not only Napster, but people would send me CDs full of them. I would get e-mails with songs in them. I would also find them on websites. Many of the songs were incorrectly or poorly tagged.
I was going through my songs once and came across two songs that were obiviouly recored at the same time. I did not know the singer, but I could tell it was the same voice on both songs. The songs are so low-fi that they sould like they were recorded in a coffee house.
When I first heard these songs my ears perked up right away. It I knew something special was going on this this music. In a world of over-produced boy bands, this guy sounded like a regular person. They song from the heart. This expressions where things I could understand. It was amazing.
I do not want to overstate this, but hearing these songs was like the first time I heard In the Areoplane Over the Sea, Castaways and Cutouts, Tigermilk, Document, or Don't Tell a Soul. After hearing these songs I just wanted more and more of these songs. Anyone know knows me knows why I love these two songs.
The problem was the track had no artist names attached to it. I searched on the internet and All Music for the name of the songs and I came up with nothing. I played these songs for my friends and they had never heard him before. No one even knew the voice. There was no record of anyone singing these songs. I had never heard the singer before. While he sounded professional, it could have been some guy.
Eventually I found a radio station play list that had these two songs listed. I found out the singer was Calvin Johnson from K Records fame (or lack there of). As soon as I heard these songs I knew that I was going to be a fan of this guy. I have liked a lot of projects that Calvin Johnson has worked on. This is really when I started to be a K Records fan.
